How to avoid scamsBEWARE of the Macy’s Delivery Scam

Ranked #1 in 2014 with 650 stores worldwide, Macy’s is a well know department store where millions of consumers shop with confidence each year. On March 28th of this year, the Georgia Consumer Protection Unit announced that criminals banking on the store’s popularity have instigated a new phishing scheme that hides in the form of a Macy’s delivery email.

How They Find You

You receive an email with the subject line stating: “Macys.com Order #4893 is ready for delivery,” or “You’ve been chosen to win a Macy’s $500 gift card,” so you open the message. Once opened, the email tells you that you won a prize in the stores “monthly giveaway.”  In order to collect your prize, you must click the link. You click on the link and malware is downloaded phishing for banking or personal information. Always be wary of any email that promises free gift cards or other too-good-to-be-true perks.

Also, know that most major retailers and consumer product companies have such sections on their corporate websites. If you have any doubts, contact the company before you click on any link.

How to Spot a Scam:

It’s getting harder and harder, the criminals will steal the colors, logos and other identifiers of an established company.  The information looks real and that it was sent by a legitimate sender and website. Don’t believe everything that you see, if it seems odd it probably is and don’t become a victim.

A legitimate company will never ask for banking information or credit card numbers for coupons or giveaways.

Check the legitimate website, the company may have issued a consumer alert about the fraudulent activity and any further information.

Look for a mismatched subject line and email content. Many of these scams have an email subject line promising one thing, but the contents of the email are about something completely different.

Remember, if it’s too good to be true it probably is.
